As we all get old and withered, we find friends passing away, children starting their own lives, and we are left – ALONE, by ourselves. The realization strikes us pretty hard, and it becomes harder and harder to mingle and participate in a community.
Sadly, more and more elderly folks suffer silently from isolation. This comes with not only mental or emotional effects, but likewise poses many health risks to the old person too.
Fortunately, one 90-year old woman from California was able to find a new friend in a rather unique and heart-breaking way.
One day, next door neighbor Marleen Brooks found an unexpected note outside her door.
The note started with “Mrs. ?” –
“Would you consider to become my friend. I’m 90 years old — live alone. All my friends have passed away. I’m so lonesome and scared.”
This struck a chord in Brook’s heart, as she had never seen her neighbor; she knew exactly what to do. That same night, she grabbed some cupcakes and went in to introduce herself to the lonely old woman next door.
Later on, she found out that her brand new friend’s name was Wanda. She had been living in the same house for over 5 decades now and she had never met a single neighbor ever. The letter she had gotten from the old woman was posted on Facebook and has since gone viral.
He hopes that it will serve as a reminder for others to reach out to the elderly people in their communities as well. He shared on the same Facebook post:
“If you know someone like that in your neighborhood maybe consider going over to their home and saying hi. Maybe bring them some cookies too.”
Brooks later posted a happy update:
“She’s such a sweet lady! And she was over the moon when we came over.”
Wanda was nervous and apprehensive at first about the note, but she was extremely happy and grateful that Brookes came over, she sadi:
“I hope you didn’t think I was stupid for writing you, but I had to do something. Thank you so much for coming over.”
Now, Wanda and Brooks are good friends and they are reaching out to others as well. WE all hope that their wonderful friendship will remind us to always reach out to those that are around us. You might not know whose day you’re brightening up.
